Sutty’s custom Invictus, all built up

$

Roy “Sutty” Sutton gave us a sneak peek a few weeks back of his custom Invictus Bikes cruiser frame.

It was an eye-catcher with a slack* head angle, long top tube, short rear stays and...to top things off….it was fitted for a disc brake.

I couldn’t wait to see it all built up.

Well, it took a while but we finally have a pic of his bike put together.

It looks pretty trick.

Invictus Sutty build

Now, we just need to convince him to send some riding shots!

*I think we might be on the cusp of a bona fide trend in cruisers with slacker head angles for the dirt-jumping crowd (just look at the Commonground frame for another example) .

Subrosa/Slayer collaboration cruiser

We’ve seen quite a few collaboration bikes over the years but this type of collaboration just feels so right….Subrosa and Slayer!

Subrosa has teamed up with Slayer to produce a line of bikes that includes a 26″ cruiser.

SlayerThese bikes have been designed with a look to represent the band –and its fans — as well as set up to hold up to some old-fashioned radness (to a degree, though…the frame on the cruiser is tri-moly).

Subrosa Slayer 26In terms of geometry/frame specs, the Slayer 26 features:

  • Head Angle: 72 degrees
  • Seat Angle: 73 degrees
  • Top tube: 22″
  • Chain stay: 16.5″
  • Stand over: 14.75″
  • Bottom bracket height: not disclosed at press time

I’m digging on the graphics and colorway though.

Subrosa Slayer 26 partsWatch for these to drop some time in October.

For more on the Subrosa/Slayer collaboration, check out their issu lookbook.

Maybe you caught this over on the S&M page…but if you haven’t, take a look at this.

The S&M Speedwagon cruiser frame is now available in Gloss Clear.

Rocco’s rad 24″ Altruiste frame

I spotted @roccoq86 ‘s cool-looking 24 on Instagram this past weekend and I was instantly intrigued.

It was from a company that I hadn’t heard of before…Altruiste Bikes.

Altruiste frame

I decided I (we) needed to find out more about this frame.

I hit up Gabo from Altruiste and he gave me the lowdown.

Rocco Altruiste build

Gabo has known Rocco for close to 10 years. Rocco used to ride for Doberman Bikes, a company that Gabo used to work for back in the day.

According to Gabo,

When he contacted me for a new frame, he already knew what he wanted; something very similar to what he was riding with a few geometry tweaks. The most important being the super short chainstays at 13.9”.

The geo that inspired this frame was already very new-school. We simply pushed it a bit further. It’s much lower, to help with tricks, and I think that in terms of feel it’s much closer to a 24”MTB than a bmx cruiser, and I think that’s where Rocco is most comfortable.

Geo/specs

  • Head angle: 74
  • Seat tube angle: 71
  • Top tube: 22”
  • Chainstay length: 13.9”
  • BB height: 12.65”
  • BB Drop: -8mm
  • Stack: 440.5mm
  • Reach: 438.5mm
  • Weight :4.75 lbs

The front end also got some special attention to increase strength/durability. Gabo says,

The large 44mm headtube is pretty cool, too.  The 44mm headtube allows you to use a pressfit heaset with larger bearings for a stronger, more rigid front end. You can also get 44mm (or ”ZeroStack”) headsets in different stack heights to modify the geometry.

Pretty cool.

Roccoq86 tailwhip

Rocco shreds on this frame so that increased strength in the front end is probably needed!

roccoq86 altruiste high jump

Gabo built up three of these frame (one being Rocco’s) so if you’re interested…you might want to hit up Altruiste, right quick.

As an added incentive, keep in mind that Altruiste Bikes is a Canadian company…so if you’re buying with American funds…you’ll get a sweet deal with the current exchange rates.

When worlds collide

SE has done a great job of promoting its 26″ Fat Ripper. They’ve even gone so far as to drop an edit of Todd Lyons letting his freak flag fly — riding one  in a wild web edit.

More recently, they’ve teamed up with BMX legend, Mike Buff, to release a Mike Buff tribute PK Ripper.

It’s a real looker…and certainly evokes the look of the early days of BMX, a time when Buff and RL ruled the freestyle scene.

Now, just to mix things up a little….

Buff and SE took a Fat Ripper and customized it to give it the look of the Mike Buff tribute PK Ripper.

MikeBuff Fat Ripper

The result?

Pretty fresh.

(Frankly, the only way this could be more eye-catching would be if they somehow figured out a way to make some Fat 26″ TUFF Wheels!)

26″ Morales flatland frame…I kid you not

Well, this seems like one from left field…

A 26″ Morales flatland frame.

Yes, you read that right.

A frame just like the one Jesse Puente is riding on this 90s-era cover of Ride magazinebut in a 26″ model!

JessePuente

A BMX Museum member named GTeaser posted it up yesterday on one of the Museum’s forums.

Morales26frame side

According to GTeaser,

This frame was custom built by Craig Turner of Gary Turner BMX (GT Bicycles) and I must say, they did a flawless job. Craig is also currently constructing a 26″ Kore replica, zero offset, flatland fork to complete the frameset. I even had an ORIGINAL Morales cable hanger welded in that came from Bob’s warehouse. The frame/fork are 100% 4130 Chro-mo.

If the next thought you have after reading the above paragraph is,

“I wonder what Bob Morales thinks about this?”

Well, then my friend we are on the same wavelength.

But not to worry — at least according to GTeaser — Bob has given his blessing:

The project has had the full support of Bob Morales himself. I have been in contact with him during the entirety of the project and he expressly warranted me permission to use the Morales name. To the best of my knowledge this is the only 26″ Morales out there. This is a cruiser with cruiser geometry and is obviously not a purpose built flatland frame.

Pretty interesting.

Would love to see someone like Joe Cicman trying some modern-day flatland moves on this thing.

Looking forward to seeing this once it’s back from the chrome shop and all built up.

The teasers were coming fast and furious over the past few days…but now it’s all been revealed!

SE and Public Enemy have gotten together and collaborated on something special: The Public Enemy Big Ripper!

Built around the classic Big Ripper frame with its iconic floval tubing and looptail rear end, this collab bike is packed with tons of good stuff.

The Public Enemy Big Ripper sports the following:

  • Public Enemy (PE) logos throughout
  • Embroidered target logo on the seat,
  • PE numberplate,
  • PE padset featuring the groups’ greatest hits
  • PE x SE Bikes sticker sheet

I think SE and Public Enemy may have set the standard with collab bikes with this one!

Sneak Peek: 2017 Sunday Model C

Sunday dropped the details of their 2017 complete bikes yesterday and the bike near and dear to our hearts, the  Model C, is still making its presence felt in the lineup.

New for this year is a chrome(!) frame to add a little shine to the proceedings.

2017 Sunday Model C

Other highlights include:

  • Sunday Lightning rims
  • Sunday sealed hubs
  • Odyssey Springfield brakes
  • Odyssey Twisted PC pedals
  • Sunday Tripod Seat
  • Sunday Freeze stem
  • Sunday OEM Pursuit tires*

*Which appear to be the new version of the tire formerly known as the “Chase Hawk tire”.

The frame is not full chromoly (chromoly downtube and headtube only)….but if previous model years are any indication, this bike is still very durable. And at a $429 US pricepoint, a great deal.

Peep all the rest of the particulars over at the Sunday site.

26″ Morales flatland frame in chrome

You might remember earlier this month we checked out a unique custom frame that I spotted on BMX Museum.

You might also recall that I prefaced it with “I kid you not”…that’s because it was a 26″ Morales Flatland frame!

Yes, a frame just like 90s flatland icon Jesse Puente used to ride…only much, much bigger.

Well, I just got word from the owner that he’s got it back from being chromed and it is looking great.

Check out these pics.

Gary Turner unveils 29″ cruiser

Gary Turner has caught our attention yet again with another new project.

This time it’s a limited-edition 29″ cruiser.

Hand built out of 4130 chromoly and chrome plated by Bush polishing (the way Gary has done it since the 70s) this is a nice looking frame & fork.

Gary Turner 29er sideThe limited edition series are numbered 29-01 up to 29-100 as Gary did with their retro 26″ cruiser (which is now sold out).

Gary Turner 29er forkNice attention to detail throughout.

Gary Turner 29er rear viewGary mentioned in a Facebook post that several people had asked him about a 29″ cruiser which ultimately prompted him to do the limited run.

It got me to wondering, now that 26″ cruisers have a experienced a recent surge in popularity…is a renaissance in 29″ cruisers next?

There are number of signs this might already be happening.

FBM has wheeled out a custom 29″ cruiser (A 29″ FBM cruiser…who would’ve thunk it?)

Todd Lyons has shown you can get rad in the dirt on a 29er.

Peter “Pdog” Ulbrich has taken his 29er to the street, the track, the skatepark and just about everywhere else in an edit from a couple years back.

Heck, Pdog has even released an edit that is almost exclusively bowlriding on a 29″ SE Big Ripper.

Maybe 29″ cruisers are about to have their moment too.

It’s funny to think that this “retro” cruiser might just be on the front end of a new trend in the cruiser scene.

I’m going to keep my eye out to see if more 29″ cruisers start popping up from other companies…

Al Cayne peeps the Truth Main Event 24

Last summer we got the scoop on an up-and-coming BMX company called Truth BMX .

Based out of Maryland and run by two brothers, Eric and Tony Spears, the company was quickly making a name for themselves in the race scene.

What initially caught our eye back then were their cool looking 24″ race frames.

Well, it appears they caught the attention of Al Cayne as well.

Truth BMX Main Event Pro XL 24

At the recent Stars & Stripes National, Cayne caught up with Eric Spears to do a bike check of Eric’s built up Truth Main Event Pro XL 24.

Looks like Cayne is ready to embrace the Truth too!

Check it.

You might have noticed a new icon (“Big&Tall”) in the website’s sidebar over the past few days.

If you haven’t clicked on it, let me give you the lowdown on what its about.

It’s a new project I’m experimenting with…a blog called BigAndTallBMX. The focus is going to be about big setups and tall riders.

charlie crumlish

Essentially, if you’re a tall rider shredding on a 20 or 22″ you’re probably going to find something to capture your attention. (Cruiser Revolution will still cover 24″ (and bigger) BMX riding.)

It’s early days right now but so far you’ll find stuff on:

Check it out.

First look: 2017 GT Performer Pro 26

It may be “throwback thursday” but the 2017 GT Performer Pro 26 looks much more than just a mere throwback…it’s the classic GT Performer re-imagined as modern-day 26″ cruiser.

BMXUnion.com got the sneak peek of the 2017 GT lineup earlier this week and part of that lineup is this super-sized version of the GT Performer.

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-blue

Available in blue or white, it features a full cro-mo frame, fork and handlebar.

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-whiteAnd while it has been updated with modern touches like 990-style brakes and a threadless headset there are still plenty of retro nods to keep the old schoolers happy.

Such notables include the classic Power Series cranks…

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-cranks

…and the iconic pierced seat tube and platform.

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-seat-stayThe mohawk hubs are also a nice touch and add to the old school look of the bike.

performer-24-gt-bicycles-2017-bmx-bike-front-hubTop it all off with some 8os throwback graphics and you’ve got one cool looking ride.

If I was being nit-picky I would say I kinda wish they would’ve run a caliper brake on the back of the fork …Eddie Fiola-style…to round out the look.

But that’s an easy fix.

Face it, if you’re the old school type that would be interested in the Performer Pro…you’ve probably got an old Dia-Compe MX-1000 kicking around the garage anyway.

All in all, a cool “retro-inspired” bike from GT.

The 2017 SE 26″ PK Ripper Looptail sure ticks off all the “retro-fabulous” buttons.

This limited edition cruiser sports a “black sparkle” colorway that’s designed to dazzle in the sun and is chock-full of old-school goodies, including:

  • Cowboy Cut forks
  • “Super Big Honkin” Cruiser bars
  • Redline Flight cranks & sprocket
  • Vee Tire Co x SE Racing Cub tanwall tires.

All in all, pretty cool.

Did I mention the full padset?

I told you this one had all the retro credentials.

Truth BMX gets street with new 26″

$

Truth BMX have established themselves as an up-and-coming race brand with a full lineup of race-ready frames and components, including the eye-catching Main Event 24.

Now, with their strong race reputation intact, Truth BMX is turning their sights to the streets.

With race bikes being so purpose-specific these days, many riders opt to have a second bike to keep their race rides from getting thrashed when they’re out getting wild in the streets (or steezy at the trails).

It’s that line of thinking that brought about Truth BMX’s street lineup.

Of particular interest to us however is this street lineup includes a 26″ frame!

Truth 26 side

Available in red, blue and black; the “Silver Spring” frames are full cromoly and feature double-butted top and bottom tubes.

Other notables? How about removable brake mounts and clearance for 2.4″ tires.

Truth 26 top front

Peep the rest of the specs:

  • 74.9 degree head angle
  • 71 degree seat tube angle
  • 22″ top tube
  • 15.90″ chain stay
  • 11.81″ standover.
  • Mid bottom bracket
  • 14mm dropouts (8mm thick)

Hit up Truth BMX for the rest of the deets.
